Background
I think I need to start this review with a warning; If you are photosensitive in any way, click off of this review. Everything regarding this comic is an eye-raping mess of colors and any links or photos I include will hurt your eyes. You’ve been warned.
Sparklecare Hospital was a comic created by the pseudonymous Kittycorn S. Comet, which that name along should've been a warning that she's not someone anyone, especially kids, should be around.
The comic originally started in 2016, but was rebooted in 2018 due to troll’s remorse, I will be focusing on the 2018 reiteration of this comic for this review. It centers around a green cat named “Barry Ill” (haha get it) being transported to an evil hospital where he is constantly dissected and tortured, and was written in order for the author to cope with her trauma (which don’t worry, she will make that VERY clear).
Before a review for this comic can be written, its website was suddenly pulled as Kittencorns had been revealed to love incest porn, along with being butt buddies with literal predators. I do not like to share callout documents as I think they’re as retarded as whoever it’s calling out, but this is essentially the only place I can get this information as everything else had been scrubbed from the internet.
Due to the circumstances regarding the comic and the lack of its website, This review will be written using what was preserved on Internet Archive, and if I need to pull up the website I’ll use Wayback Machine links (which is fun using with a potato for an internet modem.) Note that the upload on internet archive is out of order (volume 4 is listed as volume 2, volume 2 is listed as volume 3, and volume 3 is listed as volume 4). There is a volume 5 out to my knowledge, but it’s incomplete and I do not have it on me so I will not be covering it. I will also be ignoring any sort of leaks or any tidbits that are not present in this comic, I’m just reviewing what I got.
Downfall
The moment that someone on this green Earth thought that these character designs were pleasant to the eye.
Ok to be serious, Volume 1 was alright. It wasn’t too awful despite the color palette and so was Volume 2, though there was this moment were a character explains to the audience the entire moral of the story so I’m placing the downfall there.
Story and Plot
The story revolves around a green cat named Barry Ill, who voluntarily sends himself to the aforementioned “Sparklecare Hospital” and is subjected to torture and dissection, once. There, he meets up with Uni Cornelious, who constantly talks in gamer speak and has attempted suicide by gouging out his eyes. Ignoring how edgy and CRAWLING IN MY SKIN that sounds, apparently this suicidal character is a closeted trans woman. Good job.
For this review, I will be referring to Uni as a guy as he never came out when this comic finished and I’m pretty sure this was only done to ship him with a lesbian character. I will also be largely ignoring the sexualities or genders of any characters as although everyone is gay and the bad guys are cis and straight (real classy) they don’t have that much significance on the plot outside of maybe a few one-off jokes.
The said lesbian character is Caroline Coughs, a blue cat character, who is rambunctious and partners in crime with Uni. There’s Hemera Philly, a yellow fox character, who is overly protective and Jay Fortune, a red cat (unsure, they have horns) character, who I literally cannot remember anything about them outside of using a scooter. Apparently they have magic luck powers and Hemera is their care taker.
For the doctors, there’s Nurse Doom who is misogynistic and dislikes his job. He also spoke gibberish at some point and I have no clue what that’s about. If this is some in-universe decode thing, it would be nice to know about it beforehand. There’s his sister Nurse Mood who ate a bug and had an admittedly pretty funny moment where she wrote down “Don’t care one bit” when admitting Barry. And finally there’s Doctor Cuddles, who is the main antagonist but appears in a rather small portion of the comic. Kittylitter outright tells people they’re not allowed to like him which TRUST ME I will touch on that shit later on, but outside of that he doesn’t have a character outside of being mean and monologuing. The most he really does is use Uni's suicide attempt to keep him in the hospital and made fun of his puppet.
The entire plot of the comic is the patients are trying to escape the evil hospital and bring awareness to the torture they're going through, but everyone is blind to their word. However magic literally exists, Uni is shown to be able to carry objects with his horn, bring inanimate objects to life, lock people in cages (I assume his puppet has the same/similar magic as him) and HEAL PEOPLE. Yes, his powers do have limits, but what's stopping him from using all of his juice to escape? Or keep people from dying? What are the real limits of his powers?
Art review
Ignoring the big sparkly elephant in the room, I am aware there were multiple people working on the comic, but the art for the comic has deteriorated. Compare this scene from volume 1 to this scene in volume 4. These are random scenes picked out, but notice the use of shapes, colors, and body language. Everyone is expressive and lively and the scene doesn’t feel too overly cluttered, for what it’s worth. In the new volume, the background and colors feel overly cluttered which is not helped by the fancy border and speech bubble decoration and the characters feel a lot flatter and more generic to one another.
If this was just a thing in the comic, I’d understand cause you gotta draw these hideous furfags over and over, but this Tumblr post is probably the perfect example that the artist’s entire art style is going down the drain. Believe it or not, these images are in ascending order, not descending.
In volume 3, the art style constantly shifts into this unappealing chibi style. It would be fine for comedic effect, but it says like that for a good couple of pages for no real reason so it comes across as more of the author being lazy.
Surprisingly, I can tolerate a good handful of the character’s designs. My least favorite design is Uni. Why the mismatched wings? Why the rainbow polka dots? Stick with a handful of colors for fuck sakes. And his horn is supposed to glow in rainbow colors when he’s turned on, classy. All I gotta say is, good luck animating some of these characters.
Writing review
One of the main problems I have with this comic is that it relies on a lot of “tell don’t show” dialogue. Outside of two major scenes, we don’t see the hospital do a lot to the patients. There doesn’t need to be a major blood bath every few pages, maybe have a character limp and in obvious pain from an off screen treatment or someone scream from the other room. The hospital sounds more like a minor inconvenience. Apparently Barry got his ear ripped off and sewn back on and we just never see it? It’s not even hinted at, just briefly mentioned. WHY? If my main character had one of his limbs mutilated, I wouldn’t be skimming over that. There was also some parts where characters will unsubtly hint at any blindness they may have regarding the hospital.
There was also a few moments where the characters will just outright tell the audience- er I mean the characters the entire moral of the story in a long monologue, which really takes me out of it.
Another thing I don’t like is that at one point Barry has a fit because he’s covered in grime and garbage juice and Uni, calls it cute? What makes this worse is that Barry is supposed to be psychotic as he hallucinates a slime monster coming at him later on. Uni is barely called out for this outside of being told to not stick his dick in crazy.
There’s also this thing with Barry not believing in magic which if magic is just a thing in this universe, wouldn’t that be equivalent to believing the Earth is flat or that vaccines cause autism? He's supposed to be the smart one. And Uni has healing powers, can he used that to heal everyone in the hospital and not make them suffer? I know I just brought that up, but it's such a plot hole that is never explained. "He can run out of magic and need to recharge" isn't as strong as a limitation as the author thinks, especially in this situation.
In volume 3, Barry becomes a slobbering horndog over a blue fox thing named Polaris Klepsky, who I literally cannot recall anything about, often getting way to close to them and this obsession is supposed to be seen as either funny or hamming in another yaoi ship. Apparently the reason for this attraction is a disease they have which is a bit weird. That’s like saying that having Malaria makes people attractive. And I thought Barry was supposed to be disgusted by diseases?
Volume 4 is probably the worst volume. It literally starts with a sex joke. Uni sews a puppet (which isn’t he supposed to be blind?) and gets laughed at, and gets the idea to bring the puppet to life because magic and acts like a mischievous cartoon villain and I shit you not, names itself “Kneevil.” He then creates a Barry puppet and they FUCK EACH OTHER at the end of the volume, and Barry has a throbbing dick (or clit cause he’s trans) about Uni at the end. Apparently the main thing is that Uni shouldn’t be blamed for the actions of his puppet but he’s still the one who brought him to life. It’s still his fault, regardless on how sad he feels about it. Fucking hell, the puppet sets fire to Doom's coat, which could've seriously injured or even killed him. That's not something you'd brush off. But I guess suffering third degree burns is cool cause Uni would freak out and rip off another body part of his if he's ever told off.
Author biography
Going back to what I said, the author erased the existence of this comic for beating it to sibling love. Before that, they were an obnoxious douche. They would constantly have a bunch of do’s and dont’s regarding their fanbase and what you can or can’t say. This would be fair if it was a small 15 year old with a tiny fanbase, but this is a 25 year old with a fairly big following. I shit you not, she once had a “boundaries” post which got deleted as she got mocked for it. She was also heavily against ‘problematic ships’ which was proven to be incredibly hypocritical.
Any time someone criticizes the comic, she would flip her shit and use her trauma as a shield against criticism. Here’s a post of her being questioned for shipping the hospital’s patients with the doctors (which may I remind you the doctors are tasked in chopping up the patients like salami) and some really professional follow-ups. She even brought up her traumatic rape experience in order to guilt trip anyone into taking back anything mean said about her. If the comic is so precious that she literally cannot handle anything negative said about it, her best option was to just not fucking post it at all.
She’s also obsessed with her alternate universes that are not canon to the actual comic to the point where it entirely clogs up the comic’s Tumblr blog. I wouldn’t care if this was kept to its own blog, but nope! Good luck to anyone who wanted stuff about the main comic. The following image is a screenshot of her Tumblr archive, grayscale images are stuff unrelated to the main comic, blacked out stuff is either unrelated all together or fanart. She also referred to this obsession as “Cometism” and tends to post these really fucking weird and creepy posts. Apparently this Sly character is based on her rapist brother, I didn’t mention him cause he’s not canon.
Eventually this “must protect me from everything” attitude caught up to her as she was caught being friends with self proclaimed pedos and fetish mining fanart for her incest kink.
Conclusion
Sparklecare Hospital, while it has its upsides, is mostly eyestraining slop that Kittycuck ditched for their incest fetish fan AU. It relies on too much “tell don’t show” dialogue and the characters are unlikable and probably are only there so Pussyhorn can lust after the idea of them fucking each other and their children. Magic exists in this universe, which creates a giant plothole and the question of “why the fuck don’t they teleport out of the hospital” is never answered.
