TrueNuff
| Original review author: | Long Tom |
| Webcomic name: | TrueNuff The webcomic is Canadian and the title is a takeoff on the slang term "True North." |
| Author: | "Threeboy" and "Brando" |
| Start Date: | February 28, 2001 |
| End Date: | Ongoing |
| Genre: | "TrueNuff is a free-to-read slice-of-life webcomic about friends, jobs, drinking and other bad decisions. It’s been running (on and off) since 2001 (somehow) and is loosely based on the real misadventures of its creators." Direct quote from the website. |
| Defining Flaw: | Bad art, weak humor, but mostly it is low-effort, repetitious, and just plain boring. Even other failed slice-of-life webcomics such as Slice Of Lief and Bengal Tales have more variety than this. |
Rating Summary
| Art: | The art barely changed over 25 years, and it can hardly be said to be better. |
| Storyline: |
Not applicable, as this is basically a series of gags. |
| Characters: | Based on the lives of the authors, whom you don't find yourself much caring about. |
| Miscellaneous Details: | Since this webcomic lasted for 25 years, one would think the lives of the protagonists would have changed over time. But the same things happen over and over again. |
| Overall: | Perhaps this webcomic could have been enjoyable if the authors put real effort into it, but like 21st Century Fox, they evidently feel they have enough of an audience so they don't have to bother. |
Background
Ironically enough, I found an ad for this webcomic on the website of another webcomic which we originally gave a positive review to but then would jump the shark. (*cough* Forest Hill *cough*) This one always was on the wrong side of the shark.
Downfall
This webcomic always sucked.
Story and Plot
There is no overall plot to the webcomic, though there are several story arcs.
Let's begin at the beginning:
- The first comic has typical young single guy behavior, namely sitting on the couch playing video games.
- Next has them sitting on a tennis court watching a game.
- Third has them at a restaurant eating submarine sandwiches.
- Fourth has a new character telling the original two about his busy schedule.
- Fifth has "ass" jokes ("cookass" etc.) Then there is a story arc about a living lawn gnome.
Guess the authors are trying gimmicks to make the webcomic more interesting, such as this and this. It doesn't work.
The humor is just barely amusing. Okay, you might respond, the webcomic was new and the authors inexperienced. So I will go on to the next year, and this time, show a story arc.
This is actually a Canadian webcomic, as the title implies. One of the jokes has a girl speaking French, though I thought most Quebecois speak English too, unless I am mistaken. In any case, the jokes are not any better, so let's skip ahead a few more years.
A story arc from 2008. Still no better. Evidently there must have been an audience, so why continue, let alone advertise this thing? So let's skip a few more years, to see if anything gets better.
Now we're in a 2016 story arc. Art very slightly better, but the jokes are very much the same. I have already mentioned in other reviews that even bad art can be forgiven if the jokes were good enough, but they aren't. Herman and The Far Side weren't known for their pretty pictures, but they were clever enough so that it didn't matter.
Let's skip ahead to June 2025. Still nothing has changed. Why don't the authors put noses on the human faces? God knows.
Now we're finally in 2026. You can guess how it has improved. Not.
Art review
The art is rather crude line drawings with color patches added. Human faces lack noses like Cathy of the old Cathy newspaper comic. The art quality is basically the same as that comic too.

After all these decades, one would think that the authors would make some improvement to the artwork. But here is the first comic and here is a later one. Guess they decided that there was no reason to bother.
UPDATE: It seems that Threeboy himself has just added the pictures to this review that I was unable to put onto the page myself. I cannot help but be reminded of how Bill Cosby actually accepted the Golden Raspberry award for his 1987 movie Leonard Part 6 which he himself hated.
Writing review
Not really much to add to what was already said, but the whole webcomic feels random and boring, with little in the way of humor or charm. At least make us care if the characters succeed or fail, but the whole shebang never piques our interest.
Author biography
Nothing besides the links already provided.
Conclusion
As I have said in reviews of other webcomics, it is possible to make even scanty material entertaining. But this webcomic completely fails to do that. It is just plain ugly and boring, and the authors failed to make the slightest effort to improve anything over 25 years. God knows why they bother drawing it, let alone advertising it.
