Rating Summary
Background
I was just websurfing when I came across this and was attracted to the art.
Downfall
Day one.
Story and Plot
Despite what you think, it's not a sex comedy where a bunch of nerds try to get laid, but a puddle of anarchy about three roommates (and the occasional visit from a black intellectual named Rauol) as they get into wacky adventures that sometimes get them killed or into some other horribly bleak demise. All filled with mind-rotting violence, random shit, weirdness and the occasional intellectual reference that if feels a little like Evan Dorkin's work minus the funny and structure.
Art review
The art has a quirky style that works for the series and the creator knows how to put together panels, but that alone will not save the comic. There's also these footnotes that try to be funny, but I don't like having to tilt my laptop to the side to read some of them.
Writing review
Have you ever felt your own brain frying? That's what mine is doing as I finished going through Nobody Scores. Since this is a gag comic, there isn't really a plot other than weird crap going on that sometimes just feels so dumb and random that I eventually felt my head literally hurt after a while. Random humor can be funny but not when they forget to add the joke or make it funny in the first place. And though there has been a rare halfway decent one, sometimes the good concepts (have to admit the sign in that comic was funny) have has been handled a lot better by other people. Don't get me wrong, bleakness can be funny but you need to balance it out (even Al Bundy won sometimes.)
As I mentioned before I feel Brandon wants to be Evan Dorkin, but forgot that you need structure and wit to make stuff work and that just making your art look like his will not work. Just look at Dorkin's brilliant Eltingville cartoon. He also knows how to make his characters likable which Nobody Scores does not. The characters are pretty damn annoying and tend to get into at least 50% of the trouble thrown at them due to their own stupidity. But the worst of them is Jane. This idiot makes Peter Griffin look like a responsible adult. Get it through your thick skulls webcomic writers, these kinds of wacky characters ARE NOT FUNNY. Their stupidity that would get them killed in real life is more infuriating than endearing so please try to make them more like actual people instead of the personification of a child's obnoxious screaming.
Author biography
Don't know much about him.
Conclusion
They say its better not to be a clone of your idol, because you end up being a shallow copy. Inspiration is fine, but you need to find your own voice and learn what made your idol great. Then again, maybe there's something wrong with my sense of humor but god is this comic not funny.
