Talk:To Save Her

From The Bad Webcomics Wiki

You seem to have left out the part about how the first forty pages of the comic are the main character talking to themselves, and the enormous walls of text therein.--Izzus (talk) 20:35, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

  • Good point. I think I might add that tomorrow. Busey.pngoddguyBusey.png 21:48, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, about the offense thing.

I'll level with you: This is a terrible webcomic. Most of this author's work is utter shit.

And although I've seen some funny and oftentimes insightful reviews on this wiki that are incredibly caustic, I don't really see the need for the personal attacks on her gender or person. Having a terrible webcomic does not make the transphobic comments about her appearance or saying 'tranny' thrice, justifiable. AngryLesbian and Yaoihuntressearth both avoided this kind of thing in their hilarious overviews of her disasters, why don't you?

That's not a rhetorical question, I enjoyed your Sinfest and Shortpacked reviews, but this was nigh unreadable due to the overt bigotry.

  • I understand what you are saying but I stand by what I wrote... Mostly. I actually write "tranny" because "Transvestite" and "Transsexual" are long words that I always confused. I just write tranny because i'm lazy. Maybe i'll get around to fixing it since me half-assing is my own fault.
Now, about the attacks on his/her gender and such: Virtually all our reviews have personal attacks. We have a bio section in each explicitly for that purpose. As far as the sex change jokes - It is pretty much accepted by everyone in the webcomic community that Jenny is not really a transsexual. In fact, i'm pretty sure he admitted it himself and said he regrets the surgery (at least so I was told). Everyone (including myself) is pretty sure he's just insane. If it wasn't for the fact he claims to be able to travel through time, control lightning and instead of a woman wants to now become a jello alien, I might have been more respectful. I honestly have nothing against the trans community and nowhere in the review attacked them in general, and I know some people perceive that as bigoted anyway, but I don't intend to placate people because they got angry and misinterpreted my intent. That's on them.
I hope my answer is good enough for you (although I doubt that it is). Busey.pngoddguyBusey.png 09:49, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

    • I sincerely appreciate that you're taking this criticism in a non-shitty way with a willingness to revise at least one thing, and I want to emphasize that I'm not trying to be asshole and whinge about this review to you. I concede the inclusion of the personal stuff, because abominations like Sonichu would not make sense without the biographical information, and it's helpful to know what kind of malformed imaginations these webcomics are spawned from. Nonetheless, I had not really trawled the depths of JDR's insanity, and was unaware that she regretted surgery or that she claims to be a time travelling, lightning-shooting jello alien, but these would be pretty good things to link to in the review proper whenever you can get to it, because the former might help show that JDR shouldn't be considered trans [if you want a short descriptor, 'trans' is a good, neutral one] and the latter would be a hilarious accentuation of what you have here already.
  • Well, this is a site about criticism, what kind of hypocrite would I be if I could only dish it out but not take it. Anyway, I removed the word "tranny" since i've gotten some complaints about that so you're probably right and it's for the best (I shed a tear as I deleted the words "the tranny granny"). I added a link to her comic about her controlling lightning and so on... I still need to find where she someone said she said she regrets the surgery. I remember I read it but not where. Sadly a lot of the really crazy stuff about him/her was on Portal of Evil in the early 00's and has since been lost.
Anyway, thanks for the criticism :) Busey.pngoddguyBusey.png 08:07, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
  • And thank you for removing "tranny". :) And... my god... the "Impossible Things Before Breakfast" was a "gold" mine of psychopathy and unintentional comedy. At first I was like, this has to be some sort of magical realist stuff from the first person perspective but... nope. JDR does not have a reality-accordant epistemology in that hare-brain of hers, to put it lightly. Also, as you probably have noticed, I err on the side of caution with these things and refer to JDR as a 'she' because even in the sexless jello alien comic [suffice to say I needed a couple asprin after taking it all in] she refers to herself as a 'creatrix', which is the feminine version of 'creator'; further, from what I can glean from her bio [1] to a TMI page on the surgery itself [2] she says that she "never regretted [her] transition" which was "truly a blessing" and for it she "says a silent prayer of thanks to my little Goddess for the utter relief that I feel. I have been freed from the prison of the wrong life in the wrong body, and there is everything good about it." That's pretty unambiguous, and I tried to find anything to contradict it elsewhere in that site or on Google, but I haven't turned up anything yet. And as far as tricking her therapist... I mean, it was 1982. The psychologists needed to transition back then were pretty much all pasty-skinned, horn-rimmed glasses wearing octogenarian men who thought anyone who wanted to have sex reassignment surgery should be Judy Cleaver if they were to be women at all. Although the test on her site is considered poisonous bullshit by most of the trans community and anyone with a brain. Anyway, I think I'd go with AngryLesbian and Yaoihuntressearth, or Wikipedia and TV Tropes, and use feminine pronouns. Nonetheless, I don't really want to press it, and I'm glad for the changes thus far. I'll probably just retreat back into the darkness from whence I came, in order to enjoy[?] more bad webcomics here. I think you're doing an excellent job overall, and the Sinfest review was especially poignant; it's probably the steepest fall I've ever seen a webcomic take.
  • Honestly, I don't remember where I read it, only that I did. Also, it's not impossible for him/her to contradict himself. After all, he thinks the inspiration to draw comics came to him from a magical angel or something. As far as the pronouns, ever since John Solomon wrote a review about JDR referring to her as a "Him" or an "It" and she responded by threatening to murder him for it, it's been pretty much tradition to do the same. Sorry I can only meet you half way. Busey.pngoddguyBusey.png 10:26, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
  • Eh, no hard feelings here, and good luck with your future webcomic reviewing endeavors; hopefully you'll be comparatively free from death threats. In any case, I'll be seeing myself out now~ :)
  • What are you talking about? Death threats are like an early christmas present. We've only ever had one ;_; Busey.pngoddguyBusey.png 07:48, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
  • I'm trans too, and I too feel offended by the transphobic language. Basically, I second everything the poster above said. Just because JDR is a total nutcase and COGIATI is unscientific bullshit doesn't invalidate her claim to a female identity in my eyes. As if cis women can't be total nutcases and write bad incomprehensible webcomics and bullshit gender tests. :) - LucidFox (talk) 10:50, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Believable

There's a bit of JDR-style insanity in my family. I can very much believe that he publically expressed regret for his gender reassignment, then later decided his surgery was God's gift to humanity. It's possible he himself is in complete denial of the existence of his earlier regret. I'm using "he" for a few reasons. Primarily, one of the worst things you could do with the similarly crazy person in my family was give her what she wanted; make her feel special. It would not be enough for her for very long at all, and it somehow seemed to prompt her to find new ways to make you suffer!
